    Accessible Cultural Programming discussion
    The State of Things: An Update on Accessible Cultural Programming in the Twin Cities, a panel discussion and open dialogue hosted by the Walker Art Center on Friday, May 13th from 10am to 12pm. For the past two years, as part of its Open Door Accessibility Initiatives, the Walker has been in conversation with colleagues and community members invested in assuring the inclusivity of cultural organizations around the Twin Cities.

    In these conversations a common concern continues to arise: good things are happening at museums, theaters, etc. around access, but few people know about them in time to participate despite the individual organizations’ marketing and outreach efforts. The hope is that by bringing together representatives from these organizations and members of the community we’ll begin working toward improved communication and connectivity. Organizations will get the word out and community members will respond to program offerings and offer suggestions for better, sustained communication to the audiences these organizations wish to reach.

    Come and hear what’s already in place and offer ideas for what you’d like to see in the future. Talk with staff at various visual arts, science, and performance venues, nonprofits serving people with disabilities, and working artists. The discussion will be moderated by Euan Kerr (Minnesota Public Radio), and panelists include: Courtney Gerber (Walker Art Center), Hunter Gullickson (Guthrie Theater), Debbi Hegstrom (Minneapolis Institute of Arts), Kit Wilhite (Science Museum of Minnesota).

    Discussion about a Twin Cities "Big List"
    Arts Midwest invites the arts and cultural community to a conversation about “Big Lists.” Arts and Cultural Community Databases (sometimes referred to as “Big Lists”) are collaborative programs that many cities have developed to make audience development initiatives better informed and more effective while saving time and money.

    Through the aggregation of all arts patronage within a market, participating organizations can better understand the health, vitality and profile of the arts and cultural ecosystem. An organization can contextualize their audience within the ecosystem, enabling better decision-making on best prospects. These programs provide best practice list management services like National Change of Address (NCOA) and merge/purge of mailing lists at below market rates that can reduce organizational marketing expenses. They also facilitate list exchanges among participating organizations so acquisition of targeted prospect lists can happen quickly and efficiently.

    “Big List” organizational and funding models vary widely from community to community. Come hear from the nation’s two leading providers of these services – Enertex Marketing and TRG Arts – share their experience-based insights, then engage in a community conversation to discuss whether a Big List is right for the Twin Cities arts and cultural community.

    The Midwest Arts Conference, which takes place September 7-10, is an opportunity for artists and organizations seeking bookings for touring locally, regionally, and nationally. To attend, you need to book exhibit space, which costs from $550 to $1,100. Minnesota Theater Alliance is considering hosting a shared exhibit space for those who can't afford their own, but we need to gauge interest first.     Monthly breakfast for theater administrators
    Some Twin Cities theater folks (John Thew at Theater Latte Da and Michael-jon Pease at Park Square) have started a monthly breakfast for arts administrators. We invite all arts administrators to join us for breakfast and a monthly discussion of the issues that impact us all.  We meet from 8:00 to 9:30 AM at The University Club, 420 Summit Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55102.     Community open-mic and storytelling May 21
    Twin Cities Runoff, a new progressive online magazine that celebrates our local culture and community, is hosting The HearSay: Community Open-Mic and Storytelling Showcase, May 21 from 3:00 P.M. to 12:00 A.M. at Paper Moose Jumpsuit Company, 945 Broadway NE (at Central), Minneapolis, MN.

    For the first few hours of our afternoon-until-late event, we are inviting all local writers, musicians, puppeteers, performance artists, et cetera, to perform at our Community Open Mic. Sign up now, and you get five minutes and a microphone at one of the largest art festivals in the metro area– anyone with original work is invited to perform. We’re accepting performers on a first-come, first-serve basis, so we encourage you to join us–no matter what your experience, as long as you have a story to tell (or a song to sing!) we want to hear anyone who has something original to say.     Be a part of Patrick's Cabaret's 25th anniversary parade
    Hello all of you incredibly talented artists, performers, lovers, fighters, friends, academics, dreamers. Patrick's Cabaret is celebrating our 25th Anniversary this year! In honor of this great milestone, we're hosting a huge celebration on Saturday, June 11th - a performance parade and block party, followed by a cabaret and dance party.

    In celebration of artists and free speech, we're inviting anyone and everyone to take part as a performer in the parade, and we hope to have a mile of performers! We're encouraging every performer to bring something really unique, colorful, and (of course!) entertaining to the street, whatever that may be... walking, biking, dancing, playing, marching, speaking, singing, strutting, swirling, etc. More info, and sign up to be in the parade here.

    NEA Challenge America Fast Track grants
    The new NEA Challenge America Fast-Track grants, deadline May 26, are designed to extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations, are for $10,000 each, and receive an expedited application review (compared to other NEA programs). The program supports focused, distinct projects that take place over limited periods of time and involve limited geographic areas. Such projects generally are smaller in scale and shorter in duration than those in the NEA Art Works category. All projects must extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations that have limited access to the arts due to geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability. The involvement of professionally trained, experienced artists and arts professionals is essential. Get more info here.

    Touring bus for sale
    Since touring seems to be one of the themes of this newsletter, this seemed worth including. A 1966 International Land Yacht perfect for a few artists or a small company interested in touring. The price on the Web site says $18,500 but I've heard from a reliable source (thanks Sarah Gioia) that this beautiful bus just waiting for adventure could be had for $5,000. Check it out here.

    IRS revoking nonprofit status for non-filers
    As the IRS prepares to publish the first list of nonprofits whose tax-exempt status has been revoked for failure to file an annual return, many nonprofits, funders, and donors are probably wondering: "How will the revocations affect me?" gives you the answer in a new report available for free download.     Google has lots of nifty stuff for nonprofits, including Google Grants (free AdWords advertising), YouTube for Nonprofits, Google Earth Outreach Grants, and Google Apps for Nonprofits. Learn more here.

    Wild Apricot is a company that makes Web management and membership management software. In a very nice show of goodwill toward the nonprofit universe, they also gather and publish a monthly list of FREE Webinars available from various sources. Read this month's list here.

    Report on donor management systems
    Idealware, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, provides thoroughly researched, impartial and accessible resources about software to help nonprofits make smart software decisions. They have recently published the report Do You Need a New Donor Management System? A Step-by-Step Decision Making Workbook, available for free download here.

    County Seat Theater goes to AACT Fest Finals
    Cloquet's County Seat Theater Company performed Wiley and The Hairy Man at the Regional AACT Festival this weekend in Salina, KS and they have been chosen to move on to the AACT Fest Finals in Rochester, NY. Congratulations! Go Minnesota!
