Firing Up Your Fundraising: Digging into Development Operations

While successful fundraising is all about the relationships, the stories, and the “ask”, there is necessary administration behind the scenes to make it successful. In performing arts organizations, we often don’t have staff, infrastructure, or the budget to support those operations sufficiently. Many people simply aren’t even sure where to start. Or they are stepping in to take over a development operation that may have been neglected for a while. Sound familiar?
 
This session will provide information about how to organize your own development operations, provide the basic terminology and concepts that fundraising departments typically use, and will help organizations establish realistic goals for organizing and supporting the work of raising the money. We will also spend some time specifically on the logistics of implementing a direct mail campaign.
 
This session will be especially useful to smaller and/or newer organizations, as well as a helpful “back to basics” refresher for staff and volunteers at performing arts organizations of any size!
 
About the presenter: Joanna Schnedler has been active in the Minnesota theater community for over 18 years, with experience ranging from small start-ups to major performance venues. Joanna’s career in fund development includes 10+ years of development data management, donor acknowledgement, and grants administration. She has also led major CRM/ticketing platform RFP processes for performing arts organizations. She is the Executive Director of the Minnesota Theater Alliance, and holds a Masters of Nonprofit Administration and MBA from Hamline University. Development operations are Joanna’s favorite part of fundraising, because she is a proud data geek.
